Get wind of this! The UK has the largest wind energy resource in Europe - could your area be a prime spot? A score of 3 or above means that your area has moderate-good potential of harnessing wind power.

Start saving energy costs and reducing your carbon footprint by installing small wind turbines or hooking up to a community wind farm. The results will blow you away.

How we determine this score

Nuable is underpinned by GIS analysis which has been used to identify where the physical characteristics of areas within Wales make an area well-suited to a renewable or low carbon technology or not. As Nuable is developed over time, it will be possible to add further technology assessments and to refine the version 1 assessments with more detailed data. As technologies change, the assessments can be updated to reflect this.

The first version of Nuable includes assessments of the suitability for the following technologies:

  • Large-scale wind turbines (assessed using windspeed at 100m above ground level)
  • Small-scale wind turbines (assessed using windspeed at 50m above ground level)
  • Micro-wind turbines (roof or pole mounted turbines) (assessed using windspeed at 10m above ground level)

The GIS analysis is done on a grid cell basis. Whilst the ranking of potential is based primarily on the physical/geographical/geological characteristics, each cell in the tool provides additional information on a range of additional considerations that will influence the ease of delivering that technology solution in that location. The rank for each technology is between 1 and 5; with 5 being the greatest potential and 1 being the lowest potential.

  1. Low potential
  2. Low – medium potential
  3. Medium potential
  4. Medium - high potential
  5. High potential

Let the sun shine! A score of 3 -5 means your area has a moderate-good potential of harnessing solar power.

Start saving energy costs and reducing your carbon footprint by installing solar panels on residential rooftops or linking in with a solar farm. Adding battery storage can improve performance by capturing surplus energy.

Turn up the heat! A score of 3 or above means your area has moderate - good potential of harnessing ground source heat.

GSH is the process of pumping water into the earth and using the geothermal temperatures of the planet to raise the temperature of the water. A cost efficient and planet-friendly way to heat your home.

Get hyped about hydro. A score of 3-5 means your area has moderate-good potential of harnessing hydro power.

Tap into micro generation schemes or a large scale plant and start saving energy costs by leveraging the energy of constant flowing water. Your carbon footprint just got smaller.
